Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Its Traditional Music

by Nebure Eid Elyas

yaredThe Beginning of Church Music

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the word music as “The art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds, or both, to produce beauty or form, harmony and expression of emotion.” In this sense Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has developed in her long history her own unique music that combines vocal and local instruments virtually directed in the praise of God.

The history of music goes as far back as in the time of creation. The Angels praised God with music immediately after they were created.(Job 38:6) God has created the Angels and human beings so that they would praise His name and inherit His Kingdom, and therefore, He has created the need for music as one of the basic needs of their nature. Consequently the Angels and human beings have natural inclination to make and hear music. Even though the inclination for music is more obvious in human beings and the Angels, it may be said that all which have life love music. We know that birds have their own particular and beautiful music the sing after their own fashion. If this is the case we may say that God who is a source of all gifts has created all living beings with the needs for making and loving music. Praising God is a continuous act of the Heavenly creatures from the time of creation. (Rev.4:9, Is.6:2:4)

Music is a natural gift and spiritual food, and therefore, people have enjoyed it from the time immemorial. (Gen. 4:21) The tune and content might be different depending on the culture, but all the same people everywhere have used music for a variety of purposes for ages. In Ethiopian tradition we can broadly divide music played into five categories depending on the situation and condition each with its own unique tune. These are:

  1. Mahlet: This is the music with which God is praised
  2. Zefen: This is a secular music played at the time of enjoy
  3. Likso: This is a music people play to express grief at the time of their sorrow
  4. Limena: This is another type of music the poor play to get sympathy of people to give them alms
  5. Kererto: This is a war song played to motivate and energize people for an action such as going to war to fight the enemy

Now we have seen the origin of music and what it is we precede to the discussion of the major topic which is Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Music.

1 Music in the Pre-Christian Era

Liqe-SeyoumanRadeAsres

It is very well apparent that Ethiopians have worshipped, feared, and praised God in their own way even before the Jewish faith was introduced. Where there is worship there is praise which is expressed in musical tunes.

The art of religious music took shape in Ethiopia with the introduction of the Jewish faith when Minilik I came back from Jerusalem with the Ark of the Covenant and with it the Levites who accompanied the Ark of the Covenant. These Levites, whose major function was to preside over religious rites, brought hymn books, and musical instruments with them to Ethiopia. As the Holy Bible tells us God was praised in the time of Kings David and Solomon with music accompanied by different musical instruments, sistrum, trumpet, lute and harps, tambourines, flutes and strings, cymbals, and with ululation. (Psal. 150:1-5, 1 Chronls. 15:6, 16:4-37) The Holy Bible further tells us that the Levites who performed the religious rites before the Ark of the Covenant used these musical instruments.(Ezra 3:10)

Religious music prevailed in Ethiopia since the introduction of Judaism which has extended until our times. The Levites praised God with instruments before the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament times which was kept what is called in the Holy Bible as the in the Tent of the Presence. Thus the Levites were referred to as the priests of the Tents of the Presence, which in the Geez language is “kahinatdebtera”. The word debtera became a titular name for those who play the sacred music, and, in fact, it has been an important title given to church scholars in Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church until recently.

It may be important to note that Ethiopian Orthodox Church still uses some of the ancient Jewish musical instruments and special dress worn while playing the hymn. Among the instruments our Church uses still include drum, sistrum, flute, harp, prayer staff, and clapping of hands (Psl. 150:1-5) The dress code for the debteras are elaborate long robe, white turban or sash, mantle(gabi), and ephod(cloak)(Lev.8:7-9)

2. Music during the introduction of Christianity

Christian sacred music was played while performing spiritual rites from the introduction of Christianity in 330 A.D. as a state religion until 540 A.D. It is stated in Psalms that Ethiopians prostrate before God(Psl 71:9), and Ethiopia stretches her hands unto God(Psl.67:31). True to this prophesy of King David to whom the Psalms is attributed God has raised St. Yared from among the Axumite priests to whom He revealed the power of composing music so that He could be praised in a beautiful heavenly tune of music.

Social Events

The social source of Ethiopian Orthodox Church contribution is from the 10 commandments and 6 gospels. The 10 commandments and 6 gospels together preach social rules. Social rules are base in one society to develop social ties, understanding love and living together in peace. A society who leads his life based on noble social norms will create its own tradition through course of time. Tradition or culture identifies one community from the other community and it is an entity which defines his orthodox identity. Accordingly, Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church has contributed and his contributing the following social contributions.

Social Contribution

1.    Participating in Charity Service

The source of charity is the bible. This include beyond developing sense of understanding and humanity among the society, it includes an education which have a crucial importance for the soul. Therefore, beyond giving value for spiritual service, it has a vital importance to develop a sense of understanding and humanity in the society. The importance methods to actualize such kind of noble assets is to teach, organize, coordinate the society and open firms. The initial point for charity service is religion.

God showed without any return that all creatures are created for the good and they are good. Those who follow they are Lord contributed a voluntary service. The father of many Abraham is well known by providing needs and drinking for a person in need without any return. Many service which are listed in the bible are done by voluntary individuals every human being is expected to provide support interns of money, knowledge, labor to other in need. It is a noble Christian act which ought to be remembered of the kind Samrawi who provide support for an individual who was injured doing everything the required by his own freewill. At present clergy, deacons, church followers carryout a lot of activities at their own freewill. Opening children center as well as support provision for elders.

Ethiopia Orthodox Church has a lasted tradition of providing support for poor helping his far better than scarifying. It has been stated in the holy bible that helping to individuals in need has a grate value and his blessing. It is an Ethiopian grate value to help for those who are in need. This noble tradition is our societies social security and our Christian tradition the former traditional church student used to attend their school through the offer they obtain from the Christian society. It is the tradition which was developed by the church for the thousand of years not through the help of governmental or other support providing help for those who are in need is Christian culture which was nurtured by the church for years. Generally, the church is exerting its maximum effort provide food for those who are starved, cloth for those who are naked, cure for those who are get ill,  support for elders as well as for any who are in need. To ensure such kind of social security the church as exerted its best effort by coordinating all the concerned body.

Those social firms had structure even if it is not like the modern one. They had social securities which are used by providing support for a child who is not your biological child and other social activities. Until social security began in Ethiopia they used to provide support to orphaned children through this way. After those firms get established, the church established new firms and began providing service in a strengthen way.

Getting aid during drought and helping refugees.

Since helping for those who are in need is a noble act of the bible the church has been providing help for those who are in need. At present, by establishing in a modern way development and rehabilitation commission is providing grain and oil as well as other foods when there is an urgent need. Therefore, the church has been carried out its humanitarian support and the rehabilitation activities.

Organizing spiritual associations

There are a lot of Sunday associations as well as religious associations. Those noble assets are favorable provide charity service. They are widely used at rural areas. In case properties are lost due to an accident support will be provided. In addition to that if there are individuals who lost the physical labor or health support will be provided through those associations. This act is biblical. Because of this since it create a positive influence on the living tradition of the society; the church has played its best role for the actualizing of it.

2.    Nurturing Good Citizen

Man is free with dignity for the world he is living in. nationality is natural however to be a good citizen is the result of good discipline and act. Since Ethiopian Orthodox Church is a true and holy church there was no any time spent without teaching her followers the importance of religious discipline, moral values and faithfulness. Even if matters which came in the name of civilization is challenging the good assets of the church and its service even in such situation the church is nurturing her followers with discipline and fear of God so that to be an individuals of importance to their people and their country. The church activity extend from teaching moral as well as ethical values to religious doctrines.

3.    Developing Working Tradition

The church teaches that work is the base for living bible which is the guiding principal of the church broadly explain the importance of work and develop working tradition. Lord has given responsibility to our father Adam so that to nurture her in a way to purify. After he has committed a sin Adam was condemned to live based on the effort he exert. The bible clearly states that every one should live based on his effort. Those who lived on their effort are blessed. The church based on this biblical education teaches her followers to focus on their work otherwise an idle brain is the workshop of the devil. From this perspective the church is playing its best for the overall development of the people and economical, as well as developmental security.

4.    Teaching Discipline

The word discipline is to mean to be learned from the day to day activities and the goodness of work. The church teaches its followers to unconditionally love human beings, engage in a noble act, to avoid from any distractive behaviors and to lead their life through purified and holy spirits. Through the education the church teaches its followers are preached to have a good concise, to avoid from un decent words and thoughts, to far away from arrogance and undo pride, to forgive and forget to have an acquaintance with God and to do all good things. Because of this the church is preaching her followers to be well disciplined, to respect the rules of God and to engage in noble and good deeds. In a social life the church teaches his followers not focus on a weakness of their fellows, and that the source of evil is ignorance because of this any one who commit a mistake, instead of blaming should be make aware of his mistake.

This changes the evil in to the good. Since our life is not only revealed before God but also before human beings, we should do all the best for every one we should think good things not only before God but also before human beings. Generally, the church preaches disciplined so that her followers should be faithful his country, and to his fellowman, discharge his responsibility with the required one, to carryout his activity without prejudice. Through the discipline teachings the church is exerting its best to protect corruption and to enhance the over going development of the state.

The church teaches the value of respect, tax should be paid if it is due, duty shall be performed, what ought to be feared ought to be feared, what ought to be respected ought to be respected. Because of this the church is contributing a lot by teaching her followers so that to pay Asrat for the church and tax for the government on time. We can dare to say that because of the following.

  • For its teaching makes the followers to be obedient, decent with fear of God, to be free of foreign activities as well as distractive addictions and it will nurture good citizens.
  • The church has mold and nurtured the citizen for a long period of time through traditional church school so that to be well disciplined and to have a sense of responsibility. Her contribution is not some thing that can easy for forgettable.
  • The church has exerted a maximum effort to give an ethical education along with the regular education up to higher institutions.
  • Especially during this world of globalization, the young generation is highly exposed to unnecessary and distractive behaviors. Corruption for which the state is striving hard to tackle them through a commission level, the church is also accepted that it is its religious obligation to carryout an activity so that to alleviate such kind of ill behaviors by teaching discipline and ethics from the root.

5.    Participating in Health Care activities

Health does not mean the absence of an illness. Rather it is an individuals physical, psychological, social, mental as well as spiritual well being. For a community which is in poverty health problems takes big place beyond the biological health problem any mental anxiety as well as disorder highly affect on the production of the society. The church contribution to avoid health problems can be listed as follows.

  • By providing spiritual as well as biological well being.
  • By enabling to have a mental health.
  • By providing psychological health.
  • By expanding modern health firms etc.

6.    In the field of Education

A human being which is endowed with a thinking mental an education is important so that to purify him self from ignorance and to identify the good from the evil, to understand the wisdom of God. Because of this a knowledge which enables him to enjoy social freedom is important. Education has a vital importance so that to lead their cultural and economic life with the wisdom and to have a living tradition based on knowledge.

The Purpose of this

Its prior activity is to draft curriculum from traditional church school up to higher institutions so that to nurture a generation who has a conscious mind and who can cope up with modernity. To this effect it is the duty of the church to draft the curriculum and prepare information as well as equipments required for that purpose.

Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world which have their own alphabet. Its identification is a geez alphabet. It is the owner of geez alphabet. Because of this it was found necessary to facilitate the situation. In different educational faculties based on abroad has established facilities to conduct study on Geez education. The church used to serve as Ministry of Education by construction modern school as of 1930. After the introduction of modern education in our country the church has built its own modern schools and has mold the young generation through discipline and to be an individuals who love their own country and people.

7.    By Recording History and Wisdom

The beginning and source of Ethiopian art is Ethiopian Orthodox Church the elite and sagas of Ethiopian Orthodox Church began to right using different colors while the other world was to infant to have their own writing skills. Our  fathers used to record the history of Ethiopian as well as abroad through their own writing skills which was prepared from sheep, goat and other animals skim traditionally known as Berana.

8.    Cultural Contribution

The base for Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church is the bible. The church preaches its religion from by coordinating Tuwfit, Tuwfit from the system, the system from the culture the church is reach with cultures which can be a source of a good culture assets. Developmental Activities

Treasures indicate that developmental activities were commencing in the church. Therefore, developmental activities are commenced from our God. God first creates the earth then human beings because of this the church will carry out its activities inline with the order of God and rules.

An individual who have no interest to work can not dare to speak that he has a religion or faith. As holy books stated it religion is the only revealed through work. Briefly religion void of work is meaningless. Based on this idea Ethiopian Orthodox Church is engaged at the developmental activities in the monasteries and Churches which are located in the rural and urban areas form the ancient time.

The first Ethiopian be shop was Aba Fermenatos and his title was “Archbishop of Axum and the whole Ethiopia” after him it was decided that Ethiopian Orthodox Church shall be administered under Eskndria Church Holy Synods having one diocese. This lasts for more than 1000 years during the era of emperor Zeriakob in 1438 Abunegebrieal was appointed by the Egyptian Patriarch John the 14th to be an Archbishop of Shoa Diocese. Next during the era of emperor Yohannes in 1874 Abunematios was appointed to be an Archbishop of Shoa Diocese.

The mentioned bishops and Archbishops have served the diocese during their term. The diocese with its multi activity and administration tasks is also exerting its maximum effort to participate in the state social, public, administrational as well as developmental activities.

Specially before three years, in order to restructure the diocese with efficient, speedy as well as modern working procedure an activity was carried out Abune Samuel with the good will of His Holiness AbunePaulos. Following this a three story modern building was able to be constructed which is very attractive.

The modern building place its role in facilitating and making the working procedures of monasteries as well as Churches to be smoothes and put its base for the Ethiopian Orthodox TewahidoChurch Followers to follow a modern working procedure, efficient, well aware, transparency and accountability working procedures. This put its interesting base for surfacing a modern working procedure leaving behind the backward working procedure.

Addis Ababa has diocese was divided in to 4 dioceses which were North, South, East and West dioceses.

Now The diocese has become to one and the Previous sttucture which is Addis Ababa diocese.

Background of the Diocese

In accordance with Ethiopian Orthodox Church Constitution (Kaleawdi) chapter six, Article 38 up to 45, next to the secretariat office, it is essential for the unity of the church to establish a diocese and working to actualize its church doctrine in line with the church structure.

As it has been stipulated in the constitution of the church (kalewadi) Article forty three, no one except “The secretariat office of the bishop is in charge of administrating of the monasteries which are located under the diocese, spiritual assemblies which are established in different level as well as to the district churches”. The English term “diocese” comes from a Greek term ‘dioikesis to mean to a subject to the jurisdiction of a bishop.

Diocese was first implemented while the holy apostles divided the holy doctrine of the Lord and began to preach. The holy apostles have exerted all what is the required to teach the doctrine regardless of the problem they face. Through the diocese they were assigned, they have built a church, teach followers, appoint priests and Deacon and preach the holy sculpture. This can be testified through the noble acts and teachings of St. Peter In Ronne diocese, John in the small Asian diocese, Thomas in India diocese, Markos in Eskindirya.

Through the good will and for sighted vision of Ethiopian Emperor and people the first title of bishop was given in ferminatos diocese in Eskindria as “Bishop of Axum as the whole Ethiopia”. Then after, Ethiopian church has stayed for more than one thousand years under Eskindria church Holy Synod as one diocese.  At different times since more than onebishops had been appointed to serve Ethiopian church, it indicate that there were more than one diocese. During the era of emperor Zera Yaqob, in 1438 two bishops came to Ethiopia being appointed by the Egyptian Patriarch John the 14th. The bishops were Aba Michael for Amhara, Abune Gebriel to Shewa Diocese.

During the era of emperor Yohanes, in 1874, four bishops came from Egypt: Abune Petros had been appointed as an Ethiopian arch bishop, Abune Matiwos Shewa bishop, Abune Lukas of Gojam, Abune Markos of Bigemdir diocese. In a book written by Tsehafi Teazaz “Tarike zemen Zedagmawi Minilik” it had been stated the diocese of Abune Matiyos “Shewa beyond Beshelo,Yeju, Wadla, Delantan, Dawnten, Girameketen, Begemdir Mejan, Sedin, Fegoran, Chihran, Dembian, Armachiho, Mereban, Janfekeran, Janwaron, Kolawegera, Tegedie, Welkayt”.

During the era of emperor Hailesilassie, while Ethiopia gets its first bishop, the proclamation enacted Article one “the arch bishop of the whole Ethiopia shall be assumed by Abune Kerlos, south was given to Abune Sawros, west to Abune Abraham, east to Abune Petros, north to Abune Yishak, to be administered”.
This proclamation stated in detail the diocese region of each bishop rests and their seat town.

During the Italian aggression, the Egyptian Abune Kerlos returned back to his mother country and Ethiopian sages and bishops gathered and have appointed  Abune Abraham to be an arch bishop and other five bishops. Following this, new diocese had been established. Abune Yohanes had been appointed to be a bishop of Shoa, while Abune Markos of Eritrea, Abune Matiyos of Wollo, Abune Gebrial of Gondar and Abune Lukas of Welega.
Ethiopian church began to establish it’s over diocese when she get patriarch from Ethiopia.

In 1943 the first Ethiopian patriarch was his holiness Abune Baseleyus; Abune Tadios for Gure, Abune Gabriel for Wollo, Abune Markos for Eritrea, Abune Philipos for Israel, Abune Gorgorios for Kefa were appointed to be bishops. This indicates that new diocese were founded. In 1948 Tigray province was established at the level of diocese and bishop was appointed.

According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church history, the number of diocese increases from time to time. As Abune Gorgorios stated in his book entitled “the history of Ethiopian church” the number of diocese in 1974 reached to nineteen. At present as the book written by patriarch secretariat office stated in a written document entitled “the history of Ethiopian church from the birth of Christ up to 2000” there are a total of 48 diocese out of which 40 are locally while 8 are abroad.

Duties of the diocese

The diocese carried out activities representing the church to preserve the religious asset and values, to alleviate misuse of assets of the church starting from Christ, to expand gospel, to provide support for monasteries and churches, construct churches, facilitate a situation so that the followers receive the appropriate service, to preserve the legal rights of the church to enable the service of the church smooth and well organized, to administer clergy administration and service in accordance with the church rules and the law of the state, to preserve and maintain the assets of the church and property in accordance with the law and procedure, to enable the followers receive the appropriate church service are some of the core activities of the diocese.

What is the importance of strengthning the Diocese?

  1. Apostleactivity is guides the church activity the procedure and its system is apostles our fathers have preached gospel and expand the religion by establishing diocese. Because of this it is religious duty to establish firms which provide Christian service and doctrine in a strengthen way.
  2. To preserve the church Dogma, Kenona and Tuwfit in a smooth way. The church Doguma assets and values through smooth reserve fund to be used for churches, clergy and followers in making collaborating.
  3. To strengthen the unity of the church and cooperation by accepting a regulation from the diocese to govern churches which are found in Addis Ababa Diocese. Because of this a central body is necessary to be established to coordinate, collaborate and create ties so that to work churches jointly.
  4. To create smooth situation in the overall activities of economical relation of the church. The religious relationships which are to be created among the church for any other social and economical cooperation, churches cannot work representing the holy synods. This is because the relationship of communication should be done through the bishop. In order to organize the relationship and keep its grade as well as make it efficient a diocese which works in equality is required.
  5. To support monasteries as well as churches which are found in rural and urban: in order to support and provide the necessary help to the monasteries as well parishes which are scattered it should be in coordinated and smooth way by facilitating a situation for the support provision in a central and organized way. To this effect an organ who follow up the activity is required. This organ should coordinate the contribution of the diocese, establish a close tie within the patriarch office and execute the activities. Because of this the concerned body based on the church constitution is the diocese.
  6. To coordinate various services: intending to bring unity and cooperation for the church service considerable number of organized associations, firms as well as voluntary undertakings are available. Those associations and units are below the limits and scopes being intended because of this an organ or body who coordinate and provide support is necessary. In order to make the services of those associations smooth, successful and in line with the church rules, there is no better organization or firm than the diocese unless the diocese organize and install its service line in appropriate way the services and activities of those diocese will be unsuccessful.
  7. To bring Ethiopia people to the church: it is one of our responsibility to bring Ethiopian or be it non Ethiopians to the church by preaching the gospel and baptizing them. Those individuals should accept the church after believing its doctrine and procedure. It should not be limited only by bringing those individuals to the church rather it is important to teach the doctrine of the church and actualize what is the required. In order to realize this it is necessary to have an organ which communicates among the monastery, parish church and schools as well as holy synods. For this purpose it is important to strengthen the diocese.
  8. To establish monasteries and training centers as well as to administer them: in order to announce the new generation with the monastery life and its procedure to make prayers to get holy water and forget yourself from the stress, anxiety and unrest of this world, it is important to have and administer monasteries and establishing training centers which have a relation the same. For this effect, a diocese which administers and supervises the overall activities of clergy, deacon and spiritual teachers is necessary
